With an average annual production of 150 metric tonnes of cherry, this factory is part of a vibrant network of sister factories - Nduma, Ruarai, Kibutio, Mukui, Kamucuni, and Karaba - each contributing to the regional tapestry of coffee production. About 1,000 members diligently deliver coffee to this factory, supporting the main crop harvested from October to December and the fly crop from May to July.
Coffee is grown in deep, red volcanic soil, nourished by an annual rainfall of 1,000-1,400 mm and the pure water from Ruarai river, which originates from the Aberdare ranges and drains into Kenya's longest river, River Sagana. Cultivated at an altitude of 1,700-1,800 meters above sea level, the beans yield a distinct, rich flavor and robust quality.
This AB lot comprises Arabica SL 28 and SL 34, Batian, Ruiru 11 coffee beans - all prized varieties renowned for their rich and complex flavor profiles. Each coffee cherry is handpicked when perfectly ripe and then meticulously sorted at the factory. They are then pulped and fermented for approximately 16 hours, depending on the ambient temperatures, before being washed with clean Ruarai river water and soaked for an additional 12 hours.
The beans are then laid out to sun dry on traditional raised African beds for approximately 14-21 days. This natural drying process enhances the beans' flavor and aroma, delivering a truly unique coffee experience.
